Happy Birthday, BT!

1.  Where did you grow up?
Was born in Louisiana then moved to New Jersey when I was 3 then moved to Saudi Arabia when I was 6. While in Saudi we traveled all over Europe for 2 years. Every 3 months we went on a two week vacation. This was the deal my dad had with the company he worked for in Saudi. We then moved to Texas when I was 10. We moved to PA when I was 13. I kind of grew up all over the place.

2.  What is your athletic background?
Grade School sports, Soccer mostly but Basketball, Wrestling and Baseball. Track and field in High School as well as soccer and then the weightlifting club.

3.  How did you get started with CrossFit?
A company I used to work for had a personal trainer on staff and saw the circuit training I was doing on my own. The company had a gym on site. I asked how I could get in better shape and he asked if I knew what Crossfit was. He said it was more intense than what I was doing and said it would be a good fit for me. I went to my first class at the old box and was instantly hooked.

4.  How long have you been at CrossFit 717?
About 3 years now.

Murph 2014

5.  What are your favorite exercises/WODs?
Anything with Snatches, MU’s, DU’s, KB Swings and rowing really. I love Cindy, Isabel, Amanda and Murph. I love a good partner/team WOD as well.

 6.  What exercises/WODs do you dislike?
Running. I believe running will give you cancer.

7.  What are you goals with regards to CrossFit and what accomplishments/PRs are you most proud of?
I would love to be competitive when I am 40. I hope by the time I am 40 that I might at least qualify for the Masters Regional. I will be 36 soon so by the time I hit 40 I should have enough training under my belt to be the best I can be. We will see. That is still a few years out.

I would say my current accomplishment would be a sub 3min Fran. My first Fran was 6:42. That was after doing Crossfit for a year. At that time I looked at sub 3 like it was completely impossible. The next I would say is a body weight snatch. It took me forever to hit that weight.

8.  In your perfect world, what would you be doing in 10 years?
I would have my own business of some kind. I really enjoy making things, taking an idea and making it a reality. I like custom industrial furniture so maybe I could make that someday.

9.  Where did you go to high school/college?
I went to Blue Mt. High School in Schuylkill Haven PA. I went to ITT Tech for college.

10.  What is your current occupation?
I am an Electrical Engineer at Graham Engineering.

11.  If you could eat dinner with 3 people past or present, who would you choose and why?  Furthermore, what would you order for dinner?
Nikola Tesla. Because he is the source of many modern ideas. The guy was pure genius.

Quincy Jones. I would love to hear him talk about music and how he approaches creating a piece.

Les Claypool. I love bass. This guy is also the king of weird funny stuff. He has such a wide variety of music to enjoy. His bass guitar collection is also top notch. All custom hand made pieces.

Having these 3 guys talk together would be hilarious in my mind. They are all geniuses in their own way.

I would order a Chicago style deep dish crazy meat pizza. That pizza better be like 4 inches thick though. It should be all meat and cheese and sauce, little dough except for the crust.

12.  Who is your celebrity crush?
I don’t think I really have one.

13.  What is your favorite movie and why?
Inception. I love that mind folding paradox type movie.

14.  What is your favorite thing about CrossFit 717?
The people. I have met so many great people at 717. Going to the gym for me is my sanity time. The healthy competitive atmosphere there is really great. I have been to some other boxes while traveling. They are not all the same. It’s nice to have a quality box in your back yard.

15.  If you could have any car, what would you choose?
I would want something built by Chip Foose. Something old but with modern controls. Like an old Plymouth Barracuda or Olds 442 or an old Dodge Challenger. It would need to have an insane amount of power with a super charger with at least 750HP. The designs that man creates are simply amazing. Just enough custom design to make it unique but not enough to make it look over the top. Very subtle and minimalist.

16.  Tell us something interesting about yourself that we would be surprised to know.
I have issues with cutting holes in walls and ceilings. Every house or apartment we have lived in I have to cut holes in the wall as soon as we move in. I don’t know why I do it but I have to cut a hole in the wall then fix it. Then I know the space is mine. They are getting smaller though. The first one was a huge hole in the ceiling in our townhouse. Now with the new house it was just a small hole in the ceiling. But I did tear down an entire building. So maybe the affliction is moving to bigger objects.

It’s weird, I know.

17.  What kind of shampoo do you use and why?
I think it is VO5 the orange kind. Whatever Jenn gets me. But I know it’s orange.

18.  Have you ever been out of the country? If so, where and what was your favorite place?
My favorite place was this past vacation to Jamaica. The place was awesome on the resort but the country was very poor. Otherwise I would say the UK and the Seychelle Islands.

19.  What were your best and worst subjects in school?
Anything tech related. I went to Vo-Tech in High School and loved it. History and English were my worst.

20.  What would you say is your worst personality trait and why?
Coping with disorganized people at work. When their disorganization spills over into my workload it drives me crazy.

21.  If you won $100 million in the lottery, what would you do with the money? What is the first frivolous thing you would buy?
I would make sure first my family is all taken care of. Make sure everyone gets something so they can all live comfortably without the threat of debt over their heads. Then they can be free to do what they truly want to do in life.

After that is taken care of I would travel for a little while. Then settle back down. I am sure traveling all the time would eventually get old. I would set up an investment specifically to use the profit to once a year or so to pay off someone’s home, school loan or contribute to the community in some way.

The first frivolous thing I would buy would be a mini theme park of my design. Dirt bikes, BMX tracks, Super Cart tracks, obstacle courses, Dune buggy courses and Monster trucks you can drive and a beer garden. Yeah.

22.  You are banished to a deserted island for a month and can only bring one person (fictional or real) and one album with you.  Who do you bring and what album do you choose (keep in mind I said album, not song)?
Well the only correct answer would be my wife and Bob Marley Legend.

23.  Who do you consider your role model or inspiration and why?
I don’t really have a role model. Many people inspire me. People that have achieved success in their field through perseverance and determination inspire me. People that have an unwavering belief in an idea and just don’t let anyone or anything get in their way to achieve it. Anyone that shows effort and passion in what they do. In my mind I kind of take all these different people and take each personality trait I can identify with and make them into one person. I then try to strive to be like that.

24.  What do you feel is the most important invention in the past 100 years and why?
The transistor. Invented in 1947. Without it you wouldn’t have the microchip, which means you wouldn’t have phones or computers or the Internet. Imagine the Internet on a PC that ran on vacuum tubes. While the Internet brought information to everyone, the entire thing would never have happened unless the most basic part of the electronic circuit was not invented. To me that is the transistor. There is an estimated 1,200 quintillion transistors in the world right now. Such a simple device allowed so many great things to happen.

25.  What are your favorite sports teams (you can list all teams for all sports you are a fan of)?
I don’t really watch sports at all. I never did. I couldn’t tell you the first thing about the current teams or players in any sport. I know Michael Jordan was a basketball player. Does Larry Bird still play for the Celtics? I do watch the Crossfit Games. But that is about it.

26.  What are your hobbies and interests outside of the box?
I love playing music. I have a decent collection of instruments that I get to play from time to time. Other than that I enjoy home projects. I enjoy making things and find it difficult to pay crazy prices for cheaply made products. So, once I have a garage built, I will start building things for the house.
